Rosemary waited for Gunner on deck eight with hopeful expectations as she and her team cleaned cabins and the public spaces while the passengers were in port. She was confident in her staff. Rosemary had spent weeks retraining them before the ship took on passengers so the Helio would be safe for everyone. She was quite willing to read the four-inch manual Gunner had given her in the hope that it might teach her something new in addition to refreshing her memory about protocols. When Gunner and Mr. Phillips arrived, Rosemary could tell that Gunner was in a terrible mood and was wearing a different suit than the one he had worn earlier at the staff meeting.

“Good afternoon, Rosie,” he said coldly. “Let’s hope my visit to your department is better than my visit to maintenance.”

Rosemary extended her hand. “Let’s start in the game room, Mr. Atcher and Mr. Phillips, so you may see how we clean a public area.” She paused and looked at Gunner levelly. “If you don’t mind, I go by Rosemary or Ms. Flores, not Rosie,” she said firmly but pleasantly in her soft Filipino accent.

Gunner smirked. “And I like Rosie, so Rosie it is,” he said flippantly and sniffed.

Rosemary drew in a large breath and swallowed hard. “If you please, this way,” she said, opening the door.

Passengers seldom used the game room, and with everyone in port, it was the perfect place to show the two men how the public spaces were cleaned and disinfected. Gunner drilled Rosemary with questions, and she answered each one easily. He was irritated that he had been unable to find any mistakes by Rosemary or her team. “Very well, it appears that you have the public spaces in hand, Rosie, although I am sure you are missing something. Let us go look at the guestrooms next.”

Rosemary corrected him. “Sir,” she said deferentially, “we call them cabins or staterooms.”

Gunner whipped his head around at her. “I’ll thank you not to correct me, Rosie, and I’ll call them whatever I want,” he snapped.

Rosemary bowed her head. “Of course, sir, whatever you wish,” she said quietly.

They walked down the corridor, and Gunner allowed Rosemary to get ahead. He pulled Mr. Phillips aside. “I want you to time how long it takes one of them to clean a room,” he whispered and handed Mr. Phillips a stopwatch. “If they go over the allotted time, it is something I can use against her to have her removed.”

Rosemary stopped. “Here we are,” she said proudly. “As you can see, my team cleans each cabin thoroughly while the passengers are ashore.”

“I’ll be the judge of that,” he barked and stepped into the first cabin. He stood in front of a trashcan by the desk and watched as a young woman cleaned the room. As the housekeeper completed her self-inspection, she gathered the bags of trash and placed her cleaning rags in separate bags according to the chemical used and what the rag had cleaned. “I am done, Miss Rosemary,” she said softly.
